Diana Stewart and the Liberal Democrats are demanding urgent action to support rural
families struggling with the cost of living crisis.
Diana said: “Households in areas like ours who live in villages or off the beaten track
are often entirely dependent on their cars and are being hardest hit by these record
petrol and diesel prices.
“The rural fuel duty relief scheme is extremely limited.
We think it should be extended to include rural parts of the
East Riding, North Yorkshire and Cumbria where public transport is insufficient and
for much of the population driving is the only option.”
Diana’s call comes as research by the Countryside Alliance has found rural households
will spend over £2,440 a year on filling up their cars, £800 more than those in urban areas.
Diana said: “That’s why I am calling for urgent action to cut the cost of fuel in
rural communities. This would immediately offer relief to those being hardest hit in
areas like ours and I’ve launched a petition calling for more support for areas like ours.”
We the undersigned call on the Government to extend the rural fuel duty relief scheme to include rural parts of the East Riding, North Yorkshire and Cumbria
